Sint Maarten 50th carnival 1st May Parade

This 50th anniversary carnival parade in Philipsburg was a riot of colour, noise (sometimes too much noise for the skipper) and free refreshing drinks distributed from the floats which turned out to be very strong rum punches. There was twerking in the streets, glamour, glitter and many, many feathers. So many, in fact, that I am amazed any birds in the Caribbean still have feathers!

Most of all, this is the island letting its hair down and shaking it’s tail (and headress) feathers. I took far too many photos, of course, and wish I were a better photographer to do the event justice. The carnival is a great portrait of the island’s ladies (and a few men!). It was a joyful and inclusive event where everybody was welcome and for me (a real carnival junky) is really the Caribbean at its best doing what it does best… celebrating and jumping up!
